Course Description

Rigging loads brings technical requirements, time pressure and significant hazards into direct conflict. Swinging or falling loads, crushing points, damaged rigging accessories, unsecured exclusion zones and unclear signals can cause serious accidents. The training recreates typical construction-site situations and covers personal protective equipment, visual inspections, rigging methods, hand signals, radio communication, trial lifts, hazardous areas and the safe lowering of loads. Participants do not act as passive observers. They inspect equipment, identify defects, remove damaged work equipment from service and carry out complete rigging operations. They select suitable rigging accessories and load-handling attachments, assess weight, centre of gravity, sling angles and load-bearing capacity, and coordinate movements clearly with the crane operator. They must identify critical developments, stop the operation and take corrective action. This helps your company strengthen safe decision-making during crane operations and establish a shared understanding of clear procedures, responsibilities and stop signals.

Target Audience

The training is designed for employees who rig loads on construction sites or in comparable working environments, select and inspect rigging accessories, prepare lifting operations or work with crane operators. It is also suitable for people who coordinate, assist with or supervise rigging operations.
Course Content
Participants identify hazards caused by swinging, falling or incorrectly rigged loads and select suitable personal protective equipment and required tools.
Participants inspect chain slings, wire ropes, webbing slings, spreader beams and other work equipment at specific inspection points, removing damaged or insufficiently identifiable equipment from service.
Participants apply defined hand signals, structure clear radio messages using the recipient, sender, instruction and confirmation, and stop the operation when misunderstandings occur.
Participants select a direct hitch, choke hitch or multi-leg sling configuration to suit the load and check the hook position, centre of gravity, sling angle and potential crushing points before lifting.
Participants use identification markings and working load limit tables to assess load-bearing capacities based on the rigging method, nominal chain diameter and sling angle.
Participants carry out rigging operations in the correct sequence, keep hazardous areas clear and respond appropriately to unstable loads, swinging movements or damage.

Lesson Overview

Lesson 1
Responsibility and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) To begin, participants assess the consequences of swinging, falling and incorrectly rigged loads. They equip a training mannequin with a helmet, gloves, a radio and working load limit tables, identify damaged equipment and then investigate a near miss involving a falling steel beam. They correct an unsecured exclusion zone, distraction and an impermissible sling angle.
Lesson 2
Inspection Types for Rigging Accessories Participants classify inspections before first use, visual inspections before use, periodic inspections and exceptional inspections. They then check a chain sling, wire rope, webbing sling and spreader beam at marked inspection points. Depending on their condition, they place the equipment in either the green area for approved equipment or the red quarantine area.
Lesson 3
Communication and Hand Signals In a load-handling zone, participants observe hand signals and the corresponding crane movements. They distinguish between Stop, Slow, Emergency Stop, Raise, Lower, Travel Away and Come Towards Me. During radio exercises, they assess messages, request confirmation and correct misunderstandings. Finally, an unstable, rotating load requires a clear decision to abort the operation.
Lesson 4
Rigging Methods Participants attach a concrete component using a direct hitch, secure a pipe with a choke hitch and connect a mesh box using a multi-leg chain sling. They check hook safety latches, correct a twisted hook and assess a shifting choke point. Working load limit tables demonstrate how the rigging method, nominal chain diameter and sling angle affect the permitted load-bearing capacity.
Lesson 5
Carrying Out Rigging Operations In the practical scenario, participants move a steel beam and a pallet of stone. They determine the weight and centre of gravity, select a spreader beam, chains, a crane fork and suitable securing equipment, and carry out visual inspections. They then coordinate the lifting, travelling and lowering operations by radio. An unsuitable landing area causes the load to swing and damages scaffolding, requiring the area to be secured correctly and the incident to be reported.
Lesson 6
Knowledge Check The knowledge check brings together the key content from the five learning modules. Participants test their knowledge of personal protective equipment, rigging accessories and load-handling attachments, inspection types, hand signals, radio communication, rigging methods and trial lifts. They also assess hazardous areas, unstable or swinging loads and deviations from the planned workflow, deciding when an operation must be stopped, corrected or allowed to continue safely.
